INTRODUCTION: Why I Wrote This Book
I did not write this book from a library.
I wrote it from a hospital bed. From a year of not being able to eat. From the wreckage of a body that had followed every piece of dietary advice it had ever been given — and nearly died as a result. I wrote it from the other side of a four-hour surgery, a stroke, and decades of chronic suffering that conventional medicine could not explain and the food industry had every reason to conceal.
I wrote it because somebody needed to tell you the truth.
Not the commercially convenient truth. Not the government-approved truth. Not the truth that keeps the pharmaceutical companies profitable and the food industry growing. The actual, biological, evolutionary truth about what the human body is designed to eat, how it is designed to move, and what it needs to not just survive — but to thrive, for as long as possible, with as much vitality as possible, on your own terms.
That is what this book is.
What You Are About to Read
This is not a diet book in the conventional sense. It does not ask you to count calories, track macros, follow a meal plan, or purchase a supplement stack. It does not offer you a six-week transformation programme or a before-and-after promise. It does not tell you what you want to hear.
It tells you what is true.
And the truth, as you are about to discover, is both simpler and more radical than anything the health industry has ever sold you.
You will learn that everything you have been told about fat is wrong — that the war on saturated fat was built on fraudulent science, funded by the sugar industry, and maintained by institutions that chose commercial interest over your health.
You will learn that cholesterol is not your enemy but one of the most essential molecules in your body. You will learn that dietary fibre is not the digestive necessity it has been marketed as — and that for many people, including me, it is actively destructive.
You will learn that plants are not simply benign health foods but chemically defended organisms that carry a significant anti-nutrient burden — one that manifests in the bloating, inflammation, gut damage, autoimmune conditions, and mineral deficiencies that millions of people accept as a normal feature of modern life because nobody has ever told them the truth about where those symptoms come from.
You will learn that grains — the so-called foundation of life — are among the most biologically inappropriate foods a human being can consume. That seed oils are slow poisons. That the Standard American Diet, endorsed by every government dietary guideline in the Western world, is not a pathway to health. It is a pathway to chronic disease, metabolic destruction, and premature death — and the people who designed those guidelines knew it.
You will also learn what to do instead. What the human body was actually designed to eat. How it prefers to fuel itself. What exercise approach supports longevity rather than undermining it. How to build the psychological foundation that makes lasting change not just possible but natural. And how to live — not just in your body, but in your life — in a way that compounds into the kind of long-term vitality that most people have been told is unavailable to them.
It is available. I am living proof of that.
My Story — The Short Version
I was eighteen years old when I stood at the start gate of the Slalom at the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary, representing Great Britain. I had been the youngest British Senior Ski Racing Champion in history. I was ranked in the world's top twenty. I had given my entire adolescence to athletic excellence — and by every external measure, I had achieved it.
A training accident ended my competitive career. Years of drift followed. I ate what I was told to eat — vegetables, legumes, wholegrains, the full Standard American Diet — and my body fell apart slowly, then catastrophically. Celiac disease. Leaky gut. A four-hour surgery that nearly killed me. A year of not being able to eat. Twenty kilograms lost not from health but from devastation. Then a stroke at 46, caused in part by the same toxic diet and the medication used to manage its consequences.
When I finally found the truth — through desperation, research, and the mentorship of Mark Sisson, founder of the Primal Health Coaching Institute — the transformation was not gradual, it was rapid. Within three months I had lost sixty pounds/30kg, rebuilt lean muscle, and reclaimed an energy and cognitive clarity I had not experienced in years. I was not just healthier. I was alive in a way I had forgotten was possible.
That experience is the foundation of this book. Not the theory — the lived reality of what it means to nearly die from the wrong information and then come back completely on the right kind.
Who This Book Is For
This book is for anyone who is tired of feeling tired. For anyone who has followed the official advice and found themselves getting sicker anyway. For anyone who has tried every diet, every programme, every approach the industry has to offer and arrived at the quiet, private conclusion that none of it is working — and wondering whether it ever will.
It is for the person who is ready to stop being confused by an industry that profits from their confusion — and start understanding the biology that actually governs their health.
It is for the person who wants to live. Really live — fully, vigorously, in a body that works, with energy they had forgotten was theirs — for as long as biology will carry them.
If that is you, you are in the right place.
Let us begin.
